REEDCOB® Summer School: A New Chapter Ahead

The journey of innovation and sustainable design has been at the heart of what we do.

It began in 2013 with the creation of the REEDCOB® technology—a groundbreaking building system made with earth and reeds. This effort was born out of a partnership between CAS Studio and Eng. Fernando Cartaxo, later joined by FCT/NOVA of Lisbon in 2014, marking the beginning of a commitment to research and sustainable building practices.

Since 2018, our Summer School has carried this mission forward, becoming a transformative platform for creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning. With editions in Portugal and Egypt, we’ve welcomed participants from over 14 nationalities—students and young professionals from architecture, design, engineering, and the arts—brought together by a shared passion for shaping the future of sustainable design.

Each year, participants have had the chance to learn from expert lecturers—renowned professionals and academics—on topics like bio-based materials (earth, fibers, lime), vernacular architecture, bioclimatics, structural design, and contemporary architecture. Together, we’ve explored innovative solutions inspired by tradition and driven by contemporary challenges.

After taking a brief pause in 2023 and 2024, we are recharging to come back renewed.

With fresh ideas, new challenges, and exciting opportunities, the next chapter of our Summer School is set to be an inspiring experience.

Get ready to connect, create, and grow with peers and mentors who are as passionate as you are.
Stay tuned—something extraordinary is just around the corner!

WHAT THE PARTICIPANTS SAY

“We built with reed canes, earth and other natural materials. It was really informative and we had so much fun. This was a real turning point to my field of study but also in my lifestyle and in my personal life. I can’t wait to participate again in upcoming summer schools.”
Amina Omar

ASU Cairo, 2018 and 2021 participant

“We had a super rich experience with international students and learning from all types of experts, from CAS Studio, researchers and architecture teachers from all around the world.”
Inés Lobo

“When I learned about the Reedcob Summer School, I immediately signed in.
It not only felt great to touch the earth and build with my own hands but to really understand natural materials and their importance.
I definitely recommend this summer school to open your mind.”
